Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist Venki Ramakrishnan will be at 6pm talking about his book, Why We Die: The New Science of Ageing and the Quest for Immortality.

Then at 8pm,  Patrick Barkham joins us to present his definitive biography of beloved nature writer Roger Deakin. 

St. John’s College Bar will be open and serving refreshments.

Author biography

Venki Ramakrishnan received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the structure and function of the ribosome. He leads a research group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. `He served as president of the Royal Society from 2015 to 2020, and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 2022. His previous book, the scientific memoir Gene Machine, was published in 2018 to critical acclaim.

 

Patrick Barkham is the prize-winning author of five books, including The Butterfly Isles, Badgerlands and Wild Child. He is the Guardian’s natural history writer, an environmental campaigner and has edited a forthcoming collection of British nature writing. Like Roger Deakin, he lives in East Anglia.
