Love a good plot twist? Then join us for lunch in the Ballroom, where two modern-day queens of crime, Janice Hallett and Sophie Hannah, will share the literary secrets of writing their latest ingenious whodunits.

Author biography

Janice Hallet studied English at UCL, and spent several years as a magazine editor, winning two journalism awards. She then worked in government communications for the Cabinet Office, Home Office and Department for International Development. After gaining an MA in screenwriting at Royal Holloway, she co-wrote the feature film Retreat and went on to write the Shakespearean stage comedy NetherBard, as well as a number of plays for London’s new-writing theatres. Her debut novel, The Appeal, was a Sunday Times bestseller, a Waterstones Thriller of the Month and Sunday Times Crime Book of the Month. Her second novel, The Twyford Code, was published in 2022 and was an instant bestseller. When not indulging her passion for global travel, she is based in West London. @JaniceHallett

Alex Clark is a broadcaster and journalist, who writes for many publications including the Guardian, the Observer, and the Times Literary Supplement. She is a co-host on the Graham Norton Book Club for Audible and hosts the TLS podcast. She is a professional chairperson and appears all over the UK at Cheltenham, Hay and the Southbank Centre. Alex is a festival honorary patron.
