Sir Greg Doran is one of the greatest Shakespearean directors of our era. After the death of his husband, the renowned actor Sir Antony Sher, Greg was inspired by the surprising history of Shakespeare’s First Folio to see as many copies as he could find across the world. Marking more than 400 years since Shakespeare’s First Folio, join Greg as he shares Walking Shadow, his compelling blend of memoir and travelogue, and illuminates Shakespeare, his times and global legacy.

Author Biography

Greg Doran has been described as ‘one of the supreme Shakespeare directors of our era’ (Financial Times). He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company as an actor in 1987 and was its artistic director from 2012 to 2022. He has directed and/or produced every single play in the First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays at Stratford­-upon­-Avon. He was awarded the Sam Wanamaker Prize for pioneering work in Shakespearean theatre in 2012. He was knighted for services to the arts in 2024.

Chair Biography

Alex Clark is a broadcaster and journalist, who writes for many publications including the Guardian, the Observer, and the Times Literary Supplement. She is a co-host on the Graham Norton Book Club for Audible and hosts the TLS podcast. She is a professional chairperson and appears all over the UK at Cheltenham, Hay and the Southbank Centre. Alex is a festival Honorary Patron.
